He spent 11 years in the NFL most known for his years with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he helped them win 3 Super Bowl championships (IX, X, XIII). He was a fan favorite in Pittsburgh as they formed the club Gerela’s Gorillas. He led the AFC in scoring in 1973 and 1974 and was a 2x Pro Bowl selection.
